Proposal for all Avon Coroner Post Mortem to be undertaken at Flax Bourton Public Mortuary
Overview
Flax Bourton Public Mortuary (FBPM) is the location for all but one set of Avon Coroner post mortems. It is proposed that this unit (a new build, successful and state of the art facility) conduct all Avon post mortems from April 2012. A partnership of four local authorities funds the Avon Coroner service. Expenditure streams have been closely scrutinised; resulting in a number of proposals for reductions. See Budget Conversation launch 24th November 2011 http://askbristolonbudget.wordpress.com/.
This consultation proposes post mortems currently taking place at Bath RUH will fall in line with the whole of Avon and be conducted at FBPM.
Why we are consulting
Although this is an HM Coroner decision, Bristol City Council as lead council on behalf of BANES, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire wish to consult on the proposals to ensure transparency and a balanced view of the wider impact of proposal. The service has worked very successfully across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire for the last two and a half years. But that does not mean, despite financial implications for the partnership, the councils are complacent with local impact assessments. It is important we receive a constructive set of balanced views and reviews for the consultation.
